From the beginning, my instinct has been to create art which might provide a quiet respite, become a serene if momentary refuge from the world's disorder. Perhaps the final paradox is that, as time unfolds, an inevitable sense of searching and restlessness emerges in the work. Shadings of sadness and loss -- and, yes, hope -- only illuminate the mystery which it is our daily task to confront.
